Fresh export requirements for European Union

Residues must be within EU maximum residue levels (Reg (EC) 396/2005). Fresh produce from West Africa is a frequent RASFF interception category — test every season.

The EU keeps a list of product/origin combinations subject to a temporary increase in border checks, and okra and Capsicum peppers are exactly the categories that appear on it for various origins. The Annexes are revised roughly twice a year — most recently by Reg (EU) 2026/194 — so this is a per-season check, not a one-off.

Food placed on the EU market must be handled under hygiene rules (Reg (EC) 852/2004) — a documented HACCP-based system in the packhouse, plus cold-chain records for sea/air freight.

Not a legal requirement but a de-facto commercial one: most EU/UK retail programmes require GlobalG.A.P. (often with the GRASP social add-on) for fresh produce.

Vegetable lanes typically aggregate many small outgrowers, which is where MRL failures originate. A per-plot spray diary with pre-harvest intervals is the only practical way to control residues at source rather than discovering them at the border.

Fresh produce must meet the EU general (or specific) marketing standard — sound, clean produce, correct class/size grading and carton labelling (Reg (EU) 543/2011).

Okra, chilli and garden eggs have an interception history for fruit flies, false codling moth and whiteflies. PPRSD inspection is stricter for these lines than for fruit, and a single interception can affect the whole country lane — not just your consignment.

All fresh fruit and vegetables entering the EU/GB require a phytosanitary certificate issued by the NPPO of the exporting country.
