Pesticide residue (MRL) test certificate (hibiscus, EU code 0631020)

Dried hibiscus flowers are listed in Annex I to Reg (EC) 396/2005 as "Hibiscus/roselle" (code 0631020, herbal infusions from flowers). Under Article 18, residues may not exceed the MRL set for that code, or 0.01 mg/kg for any pesticide with no specific MRL. That default is very low, so a substance used legally on the farm can still fail at the border.

Plant toxin test certificate: pyrrolizidine and tropane alkaloids (herbal infusion)

Where hibiscus is sold as a herbal infusion or an ingredient for one (dried product), Reg (EU) 2023/915 sets: pyrrolizidine alkaloids 200 µg/kg (sum of 21 listed alkaloids), tropane alkaloids 25 µg/kg (sum of atropine and scopolamine) and perchlorate 0.75 mg/kg. Hibiscus is not one of the herbs given the higher 400 µg/kg pyrrolizidine limit. These alkaloids come from weeds harvested with the crop, not from the hibiscus itself.
