Mapping a farm in the field app

UPDATED 24.10.2026 · 5 MIN

Field mode is the phone flow for registering a farm: the farmer, their consent, the boundary and photos. It works without signal.

Before you startOwners, Editors and Field collectors can map farms. Viewers cannot. Allow location for Passmark in your browser, and stand in open ground away from buildings and trees.
  1. 1
    Start a farm

Open field mode and choose New farmer and plot (on the Plots page it is Open field mode). The flow has five steps: Farmer, Consent, Boundary, Photos, Review.

  2. 2
    Farmer details

Enter the Farmer's full name, Product, Village or community and District. Phone number, region and a farm size estimate in hectares are optional.

  3. 3
    Get consent

Read the statement on screen to the farmer in the language they understand best. Choose how consent was given: Signature, Spoken or Thumbprint. If the farmer does not agree, choose Does not agree · skip this farm.

  4. 4
    Record the boundary

Stand at one corner and choose Start walking, then walk along the edge. A point is added about every 5 m, and readings worse than 25 m are ignored. Choose Close boundary back at the start. A farm under 4 ha can use Use a single point instead; 4 ha or more needs a walked boundary.

  5. 5
    Take photos

Take the Farmer photo, the Farm from its edge photo and, optionally, a Crop close-up. They are made smaller on the phone before upload.

  6. 6
    Review and save

Choose Save on this phone. It uploads by itself when there is signal. See working offline.
